In Buddhism, practice and enlightenment are one and the same. Since practice has its basis in the enlightenment, the practice even of the beginner contains the whole of original enlightenment. Thus while giving directions as to the exercise, the Zen master warns him not to await enlightenment apart from the exercise, because this exercise points directly to the original enlightenment, it has no beginning.
